Congratulations! You made it to the last summer challenge! Woo hoo! Thank you for going on this journey to fill your STEM toolkit with new ideas that will motivate and inspire your students.

A few housekeeping notes:

#1  If you completed all seven challenges by commenting on each Facebook post, please email me with a link to the resource you would like to receive from my TPT Store. (emilystarr at starrmatica dot com) I’ll email it to you within the next week!

#2  When I receive your resource request email, I will place you in the grand prize drawing to win a classroom membership to our curriculum connections kit. I’ll post the winner here on the blog and on Facebook on Monday, September 2nd, so don’t delay!

#3  If you enjoyed and benefitted from this professional development, please consider recommending me to your administrators. I am passionate about helping teachers to spark a love of science in every child, and I love to help teachers find ways to get a bit more science into their daily routines – especially with picture books! Word of mouth is the primary way educators learn about me, so I greatly appreciate your referrals. You can learn more about my online and in-person offerings here. I also provide long-term science PD for districts through our Virtual Science Coach.

Part One:

Watch this short video excerpt from a longer class I offer about integrating scientific thinking and an engineering mindset into your daily classroom routine. In this video, you’ll discover how to use data as a phenomenon in your reading block.

Note: This video was removed on September 2nd at the end of the challenge.

Part Two:

  1. Choose a nonfiction picture book that aligns with a topic in your curriculum and find a data set you could use for a “notice and wonder” before you read. In addition to the ideas I shared in the video, below is an additional pairing. You can find a few more data set pairings on our Facebook page this week.

Picture Book and Data Pairing: Check out this Facebook post that pairs Make Way for Animals by Meeg Pincus and Crossings by Katy Duffield paired with Colorado Roadkill Data. (Because I contacted the Colorado DOT about the availability of this data, I am now on their email list to receive updated quarterly roadkill data. How cool is that! If you need the latest info on the number of bears (yes, bears!) killed on roads in Colorado, I’m your gal!)

And here are links to the data sources I shared in the video:

  • By the Numbers Series by Steve Jenkins
  • Animals by the Numbers by Steve Jenkins
  • Science in Infographics Series by Jon Richards
  • Super Sports Infographics Series by Lerner Publishing
  • Chartr Data Newsletter
  1. To qualify for the prizes on September 2nd, please choose one of your books, visit this Facebook Post, and share in the comments:
    1. What book and data set pairing did you make?
    2. What do you think your kids are going to really like about this data set?
    3. What questions might you ask your students about this data set?

Thank you for joining the One Change Summer Challenge! I invite you to stay connected on our Facebook page and through this blog, and please email me anytime I can support your amazing STEM teaching!
