    Consulting, Coaching, and Creating

Looking for science standards to strengthen your proposal? Need to create an attention-getting curriculum guide or revise a guide that isn’t getting used? Or do you need an expert-created guide that teachers will love?

I am a former elementary teacher with two decades of science and ELA curriculum development experience.

My guides support research-based best practices, Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards, and cross-curricular integration. (These connections are essential for educators who must justify materials to administrators.)

I strive to provide activities and resources that fill curriculum gaps, so teachers don’t just want to use your guide – they need it!

Decide which option is right for you. Then contact me to share more about your project and receive a customized timeline and quote.

      Example Guides

I created this 56 page curriculum guide for my middle grade book DIG IN. Because the book is designed for use as a STEM-integrated ELA unit, the guide needed to provide cross-curricular options that would sustain several weeks of lessons and appeal to 4th-8th grade students. It includes custom activities and printables.

View a collection of one-page guides and custom printables I created to help teachers bring more scientific discussions into their reading block using nonfiction picture books. This is a small sample from over 800 guides and 200 printables.

I created this curriculum guide to help educators  use Issue 6 of the Iowa Ag Today Magazine (elementary edition) with their students. It includes custom activities and priantables.

~Alison Pearce Stevens, author of Rhinos in Nebraska, Animal Climate Heroes, When Beavers Move In, and more

      Kirsten Larson

“Emily Starr’s explanation of the importance of picture books in science education is eye-opening. Science and reading teachers will see how working hand in hand boosts children’s competence in both areas. Children’s writers will see how their work fits into the big picture. A gift for teachers, writers and children they serve!”

~Kirsten Larson, author of The Fire of Stars, This is How You Know, and more

The information and resources shared clearly explained elementary science standards, how they’re used in the classroom, and how we can incorporate them as picture book writers. If you write anything science related, this is a must take class!

      ~Cheri Thriver, author

      Susan Wroble

      Alexandra Millarhouse

“Emily Starr is a gifted speaker who provides concrete examples and content that is well-researched, applicable, and easy to understand! I’ve been encouraged to way I teach and write about science thanks to her insights!”

      ~Alexandra Millarhouse, author

      Amy Wung Tsao

“I’ve looked at the NGSS standards many, many times, both as a homeschooling parent and as a writer trying to connect my work to teachers. I understood just enough about the NGSS to get by, but it still felt like a foreign language where I had only learned to order certain foods and ask where the nearest bathroom was. 😉 Emily explained it concisely in such a way that a dense page of information from the NGSS standards suddenly made a lot more sense, both in the details and in how it all connects to the big picture of K-8 science education. Plus lots of concrete takeaways on how kids learn science best, and how that should inform our curriculum guides and author visits!”
